Temperatures around the country are dropping..soon our homes will be filled with holiday cheer
and of course-we can't forget cold and flu season. While you may not be able to anticipate every ailment your household will encounter -you can prepare by stocking up on the basics.
First of all, get rid of any expired medications. You also want to throw away all prescription
medicines that a doctor has told you or a family member to stop taking. When organizing your medicine cabinet-set it up in a cool, dry place. Heat and humidity can affect the potency of medicines-so maybe keeping your medical supplies in the bathroom may not be the best idea. The top shelf of a closet, out of the reach of children, may be a better idea.
So what exactly should you keep in the family medicine cabinet? There are certain must-have
over the counter medications you should always have on hand.
First of all, a pain reliever such as aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for relief from
headaches, muscle aches and joint pain. If children are being treated-do not use aspirin and children should never be given adult strength pain relievers. Some other must have items: a decongestant to reduce nasal congestion, a cough suppressant, stomach remedies to prevent or ease indigestion, heartburn or upset stomach. Also, Antihistamines are good to have on hand for sinus relief, allergic reactions and itching.
Finally, an antidiarrheal-diarrhea can be dehydrating especially in young children.
That's why it's also a good idea to keep electrolyte solutions on hand to help rehydrate your
loved one. |
