On this week's Reference Desk-East Meets West in this new Yoga book. YOGA R-X is
written by a highly respected professor of medicine and the Yoga therapist of the stars--
stars such as Warren Beatty, Ted Danson and Dolly Parton.
YOGA R-X is simple and easy to understand-the authors explain the overall preventative
medicine mission of yoga-through increased circulation, strength, flexibility and
concentration. Great read especially if you're thinking about taking up Yoga!

There are millions of healthy cook books out there-what struck me about The Healthy Kitchen
is that Dr. Andrew Weil and spa-chef Rosie O'Daley provide interesting banter about their
different cooking preferences..but their different roads lead to the same destination… the
end result is a colorful and well-informed cookbook covering everything from the simple to
the difficult. Check out the baked vegetable wontons..time consuming-but they're worth it.
BREAKING THE RULES OF AGING
On this week's reference desk, we're taking a look at a must have book for baby boomers.
"Breaking the Rules of Aging" by geriatric specialist Dr. David Lipschitz dismisses all those
myths about being frail and dependent. The book is written in layman's terms. If you want to
be a healthy happy senior-it's important to start focusing "now" during your "younger" years

From familiar ones like Acupuncture, Tai Chi and Yoga, to less-accepted treatments like
copper bracelets and magnets. A description on each therapy, how it's used, scientific
evidence and expert opinions are given, and each chapter includes tips on finding a
practitioner, costs and cautions. The book also has a "Nature's Medicines" section which
covers more than 40 herbs and supplements.
WOMEN'S HEALTH AND WELLNESS - AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE
If your looking for a book on general women's health issues, "Women's Health and Wellness-
an Illustrated Guide" may be for you. The book gives well-drawn illustrations that help clearly
explain a long list of medical issues. It's an excellent tool for women interested in taking an
active role in maintaining good health.
STRONG WOMEN AND MEN BEAT ARTHRITIS
The book on our reference desk this week was inspired by a viewer who logged onto our
website looking for an exercise program for folks who may be dealing with arthritis in the
knees.
Strong women and men beat arthritis from tufts university presents a home exercise
program based on a study of patients dealing with severe osteoarthritis of the knee. The
program combines strength, flexibility and aerobic exercises. Keep in mind--you'll need
dumbbells, ankle weights and an exercise step or a staircase will work too.
The exercises are "really" doable. Great informative book for folks dealing with arthritis.
THE MERCK MANUAL
Need to find the definition of a medical term and be able to understand it? Need fast
information about your child's illness? Or maybe you need a reality check on the progress
of your pregnancy. For hundreds of years- doctors have been turning to the Merck
Manual as a reference-well, this treasure chest of knowledge is available in a home
edition
. It contains virtually all of the information in the physician's version, but in easy-to-
understand, everyday language. It covers all the basic diseases and conditions and many
unusual ones, including prevention where prevention is possible. Clear, understandable
charts cover such topics as common blood and laboratory tests. Any household would
benefit from having this reference on its bookshelves.

GUIDE TO SURVIVING PROSTATE CANCER
On this weeks reference desk is a book designed to help men dealing with the diagnosis
of prostate cancer. "Guide To Surviving Prostate Cancer" is written by dr. Patrick Walsh
of Johns Hopkins. It's written in easy to understand terminology and the chapters are
organized in a manner that allows the reader to skip to the chapter relating to your stage
of the disease. While dealing with cancer can be very scary-the author helps you under
the disease-which will hopefully lessen your fears and help you take the appropriate
course of action. Even if you don't have prostate cancer-this is a great book for men to
have on their shelf. It tells you why your annual physical consists of a digital exam and a
psa analysis of your blood. Understanding your body and your health is important ..so be
informed.
NEW HOPE FOR PEOPLE WITH LUPUS
On this week's reference desk-a book for anyone wants to take control of their Lupus.
"New Hope For People With Lupus" is a thoughtful, cutting-edge book that can help you
manage the flare-ups, symptoms and side effects of lupus and put you back on the path to
a more active lifestyle. The book covers everything from conventional drug treatments to
