There are more than 35 million Americans - that's one in
seven people - who have a hard time being active or doing
the things they love because of a broken bone, hip fracture,
arthritis, or sports trauma. Experts are calling this the Bone
and Joint Decade. This week on YOUR LIFE we take a look at
how some folks are trying to beat the odds of aging. There's
a long list of new techniques being tested for creaky baby
boomers. In the works are smaller incisions, replacement
spinal disks, and they're even growing bone and cartilage
with the help of genetic engineering.
First came glasses, next were contact lenses, then a
breakthrough with LASIK, the procedure that reshapes the
cornea to give better vision. Now, doctors have essentially
"one-upped" mother nature with LADARWave, the only FDA
approved technology that is routinely giving patients even
better vision than the once thought perfect 20/20.
The computer called a LADARWave sends low-energy
laser light into the eye. The laser creates a personal 3-D
map of how the cornea should be shaped. At surgery time,
when the map is transferred to the laser, the laser knows
exactly where to cut to achieve the desired results.
This week, Executive Chef Jeremy Critchfield and Chef de
Cuisine Ken Migneault, from Nemacolin Woodlands Resort &
Spa, put a healthy twist on Australian Seared Sea Bass,
with Beet Couscous Risotta, and a
Lemongrass, Soy, Orange Reduction.
On this weeks reference desk-we have the book turned DVD
"The Happiest Baby on The Block" by pediatrician and child
development expert Dr. Harvey Karp. Among the piles of
how to get your baby to sleep books-Dr. Karp seems to have
the answer. He promises "never again will you have to stand
by helplessly while your little one cries and cries!" The
Happiest Baby on the Block outlines several concepts such as
"The Calming Reflex" and "The Cuddle Cure," which he
discovered through research and his own personal
experience. The DVD also takes a look at effective
techniques around the world. Dr. Karp's helpful pointers have
helped parents such as actress Michelle Pfeiffer and
Madonna.
