New FDA approved collagen treatments for wrinkle reduction
can be used without pretesting for allergic reactions, saving
the 4 to 6 weeks currently required for bovine collagen
injections. Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast, are injected into the
skin at targeted areas to correct fine lines, furrows, acne
scars, and other imperfections, with immediate results. Other
hot shots expected to be FDA approved and available soon:

Restylane, Perlane - Use to fill larger folds of skin around the mouth and cheeks. Lasts
up to 12 months; no allergy test needed. About $550.

Radiance - Used for erasing smile lines, sculpting facial contours, and plumping lips; lasts
2 to 4 years. $1,500 to $3,000.

Artefill - A combo of cow collagen and acrylic beads that stimulates the skin to make its
own collagen. Results are permanent, but so are the tiny beads, which could show
through thin skin. Best used for acne scars. Cost not yet available. The key thing to
remember when you hear "non-surgical"-that does not mean "non-medical"..these
procedures should only be done by a qualified physician who is trained in the procedures.

Monet's gardens not only helped him heal from grief and
depression, but his garden paintings actually helped his
country heal from the wounds of war. On this week's Your
Healthy Home segment, gardening expert Tim Rowan shows
us how to create such a masterpiece in your very own
backyard. Key elements include: (1) Create Privacy (2) Bring
In Water and Nature-this helps achieve the sense of sound
(3) Add Color Through Plants (4) Create Texture with Plants
(5) Sense of smell
Jay McCutcheon was in the best shape of his life back in
2001 ; matter-of-fact he was only one week away from
competing in the iron man triathlon when he suffered from a
stroke. His inspirational outlook on life led to the
development of the Active Survivors Network ; the
organization was
borne from this experience and from talking to hundreds of
other survivor athletes who had one thing in common-their
need to overcome mental, emotional, and physical barriers and stay active.
This week, Chef de Cuisine Ken Migneault, from Nemacolin
Woodlands Resort & Spa, puts a healthy twist into a bowl
of Roasted Butternut Squash Soup.

The book on our refence desk this week is a fresh perspective
on the spirit of survivors everywhere. Every Second Counts
by Lance Armstrong, the second bicyclist ever to win five
consecutive tours de france, confronts the challenge of moving
beyond his cancer experience, his first tour victory, and his
celebrity status. Now, few readers will ever compete in the
Tour de France but all will relate to his discussions of loss and
disappointment in his personal and professional life since 1999.
Plus, he also hits on how he handles the constant struggles
with work/life balance. In every second counts armstrong is to
be admired as a man who sees every day as a challenge to
live richly and well, no matter what hardships may come.
